Education

Carlyle has an Elementary School for students from Kindergarten to Grade 6, and G. F. KELLS High School for students in Grades 7 to 12.  Enrolment at the elementary school is approximately 235 students with an additional 16 in the pre-kindergarten program.  The high school has an enrolment of approximately 180 to 190 students.

Besides a full academic program, the Carlyle Elementary School offers After School Programs on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. which offer physical activity, creativity, and intellectual development.  There is also a Family Games night on the first Friday of each month from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Some of the additional programs at the High School are Game Geeks Computer Club, Teen Council, Yearbook, Drama, SADD, along with sports such as basketball, volleyball, curling, badminton, and track & field.

In addition, Carlyle has a Parent and Tot program, sponsored by Cornerstone Family & Youth, where both parents and children can interact.  Crafts, stories, songs and snacks are all provided.

The Cornerstone Childcare Cooperative offers a playschool program during the school year, which includes educational crafts and programs, nutritious snacks and lunches.  Hours of operation are from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.  The age categories for which services are provided are as follows:

Infants (6 weeks to 18 months)

Toddlers (18 to 30 months)

Preschool (30 months to Grade One)

School Age (Grade One to Age 12)

The Carlyle Cooperative Playschool holds its registration and general meeting in September.  This program offers structure, play, social skills development and field trips for children aged three and four.  The playschool is held at the United Church, on Tuesday and Thursday for four year olds, and on Wednesday for three year olds.  For more information, contact Nikki Doty at 453-2755.

The Carlyle Public Library is open as follows:

Tuesday, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Wednesday, 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Friday, 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The library has five community access computers that are available to the public free of charge (please book times in advance).  Library cards, also free of charge, are available to any student in Grade One or older.  There is also Story Time for preschoolers, and a Summer Reading Program, so please call 453-6120 for more details and information.
